Assessment of Improved Cookstoves Market in Kenya

USAID commissioned an assessment of the cookstove sector in Kenya (see attached pdf below) to leverage the its experience in business and market development in service of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, of which USAID is a founding member. Kenya was selected as one potential target for catalytic activity due to its longstanding and well-developed cookstove sector, making it an ideal staging ground for future innovative market-based interventions that may then be exported to other nearby countries.

Winrock International conducted the study from August through October 2011 with assistance from two subcontractors, E+Co and Practical Action Consulting East Africa. The research agenda included a short desk study that, combining written sources with phone interviews, sought to highlight the major market players, trends and drivers in the sector. Through the desk study, organizations and individuals were identified for follow-up while in Kenya. The field visit was structured around stakeholder interviews and visits to production facilities, stove distribution points, and rural customers. While the bulk of activities took place in and around Nairobi, trips were made to Central, Nyanza, and Eastern Provinces as well.
